Upwork is one of the largest freelancing marketplaces in the world. Businesses of every size, from one-person shops to large companies, hire freelancers there for short tasks and for long-term work.
How work is found
Upwork works mainly the opposite way to Fiverr:
- A client posts a job: what they need, the budget, the timeline and the skills required.
- Freelancers send a proposal: a short message explaining how they would do the work, with a price.
- The client reviews proposals, may interview a few freelancers, and sends an offer to one.
- When the freelancer accepts, a contract starts and the work begins.
Upwork also has a Project Catalog, where freelancers list ready-made projects with fixed prices, similar to gigs. Many freelancers use both.
Two kinds of contracts
- Fixed-price: an agreed price for an agreed result, often split into milestones (for example, design draft → final files).
- Hourly: the client pays for the hours you work, usually tracked with Upwork's time tracker.
You will learn both in detail in Module 5.
Who hires on Upwork
Upwork clients often want longer relationships than on gig sites: a startup that needs a developer for months, a marketing agency that needs a regular writer, a company that needs a virtual assistant every week. One good Upwork client can bring work for years.
Is Upwork right for you?
Upwork suits people who can write clear proposals in English, communicate professionally and are ready to compete for jobs. It takes patience at the start, but the long-term clients make it worth it.
What you will learn in this course
You will understand Upwork's money and rules, build a profile that gets approved, find jobs worth applying to, write proposals that win, and manage contracts in a way that builds your Job Success Score and badges.
Practice task (15 min)
- Open upwork.com and search for jobs in your skill (you can browse without applying).
- Read five job posts. For each, write the budget, contract type (hourly or fixed) and the main deliverable.
- Write one sentence: which kind of client would you most like to work with long-term?
