What SEO work includes

SEO is not one trick. It is a set of related tasks. Clients often hire freelancers for one part, so it helps to know the whole picture.

The four main areas

1. Keyword and audience research. Finding what real customers search for, and what they want when they search. (Module 2.)

2. On-page SEO. Improving each page: helpful content, clear titles and descriptions, headings, images and internal links. (Module 3.)

3. Technical SEO. Making sure search engines can crawl and index the site, and that pages are fast, mobile-friendly and secure. (Module 4.)

4. Off-page and local SEO. Earning mentions and links from other websites, and helping local businesses appear in map and local results. (Module 5.)

Typical freelance SEO services

  • Keyword research for a new website or blog.
  • SEO audits: a report listing problems and fixes.
  • Writing or optimising titles and meta descriptions.
  • On-page optimisation of existing pages.
  • Setting up Google Search Console and submitting sitemaps.
  • Google Business Profile setup for local businesses.
  • Monthly SEO reports and recommendations.
  • SEO-friendly content writing (see our Content Writing course).

SEO takes time

SEO changes usually take weeks or months to show results. Google has to recrawl pages, and competitors are working too. Tell clients this honestly from the start.

No one can guarantee rankings

Google says clearly that no one can guarantee a number one ranking. Be careful of anyone who promises "page one in 7 days" or "guaranteed rankings". Professional freelancers promise work and process, not specific positions: "I will fix these 15 issues and optimise these 10 pages."

White hat and black hat

  • White hat SEO follows search engine guidelines: better content, better pages, honest promotion.
  • Black hat SEO tries to trick search engines: hidden text, keyword stuffing, buying links, copying content. It can lead to a website being ranked lower or removed from results, which can seriously harm a client's business.

This course teaches only white hat methods. They take more effort, but the results last, and your clients stay safe.

Skills that make a good SEO freelancer

  • Curiosity and patience.
  • Clear writing and simple explanations for clients.
  • Basic comfort with spreadsheets.
  • Willingness to learn tools such as Search Console and PageSpeed Insights.
  • Honesty about what is possible.

Practice task (10 min)

  1. Search "SEO" on Fiverr or Upwork and read five service listings.
  2. For each, write which of the four areas it covers (keywords, on-page, technical, off-page/local).
  3. Note any listing that promises guaranteed rankings, and write why that is a warning sign.
