Goals and measurement

Good marketers can answer one question at any time: Is this working? That requires clear goals and the right numbers.

SMART goals

A useful goal is SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

  • Vague: "Get more followers."
  • SMART: "Get 40 online orders a month from Instagram by the end of March, with a budget of $300."

Always connect marketing goals to business results: sales, bookings, leads, sign-ups. Followers and likes are useful signals, but they do not pay the bills.

Key numbers (KPIs)

A KPI (key performance indicator) is a number that shows progress towards a goal. Common ones:

  • Reach / impressions: how many people (or times) saw the content.
  • Engagement: likes, comments, shares, saves.
  • Clicks and CTR (click-through rate): clicks ÷ impressions.
  • Conversions: completed actions: purchases, form submissions, calls.
  • Conversion rate: conversions ÷ visitors (or clicks).
  • CPC (cost per click) and CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions).
  • CPA / cost per result: ad spend ÷ conversions.
  • ROAS (return on ad spend): revenue from ads ÷ ad spend.

Example: A shop spends $200 on ads and gets 20 orders worth $800 in total. Cost per order = $200 ÷ 20 = $10. ROAS = $800 ÷ $200 = 4. Whether this is good depends on profit margins: if each order earns $15 profit before ad costs, $10 per order leaves $5 profit.

Free measurement tools

- Platform insights: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube show reach, engagement and audience data for business accounts. - Google Analytics (GA4): shows website visitors, where they came from and what they did (with events and conversions set up). - Google Search Console: search performance (see our SEO course). - UTM parameters: tags added to links so analytics can show which post, email or ad brought a visitor. Example: example.com/sale?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=eid_sale

Free UTM builder tools make these easily.

Avoid vanity metrics

Big numbers can hide poor results. 50,000 views from the wrong country, or 5,000 followers who never buy, are not success. Focus on numbers linked to the goal.

Test, learn, improve

Marketing is a cycle:

The marketing cycle
  1. PlanGoal, audience, message, budget
  2. LaunchPublish the posts, ads or emails
  3. MeasureCheck the numbers linked to the goal
  4. LearnWhat worked, what did not, and why
  5. ImproveChange one thing and try again
Then repeat the cycle

Change one thing at a time (for example the image or the headline) so you know what made the difference, and give tests enough time and data before deciding.
