AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot are programs you talk to in plain language. You type (or speak) a request, and they reply with text, and sometimes images, tables or code. For freelancers they can be like a fast, tireless helper, as long as you know how to guide and check them.
How they work, in simple words
These assistants are built on large language models. A model is trained on a huge amount of text, and it learns patterns: which words and ideas usually follow which. When you ask a question, it predicts a likely, useful answer word by word.
This explains both their power and their weakness:
- They are very good at language: explaining, summarising, rewriting, translating, brainstorming and organising.
- They do not "know" facts the way a reference book does. They can produce an answer that sounds right but is wrong. This is often called a hallucination.
What they can do for a freelancer
- Draft and polish emails, proposals and messages.
- Explain a new topic or tool in simple words.
- Summarise long documents, meeting notes or client briefs.
- Brainstorm ideas: names, headlines, content plans.
- Create first drafts of outlines, plans, checklists and tables.
- Help with spreadsheets formulas and simple code.
- Some can create or edit images, read files, search the web or understand voice.
What they cannot do for you
- Take responsibility for your work. You are responsible for what you deliver.
- Replace real skill. A client hires you for judgement, quality and reliability.
- Guarantee correct facts, prices, laws or current news.
Free plans are enough to start
Most major assistants offer a free plan with daily limits. Paid plans add more usage and newer features, but this course only needs free plans. Try two or three assistants; each has strengths, and comparing answers is itself a useful habit.
The golden rule
Think of an AI assistant as a smart intern: fast, helpful and sometimes confidently wrong. You give clear instructions, you review everything, and you make the final decision.
Practice task (15 min)
- Open the free version of two AI assistants (for example ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Copilot) from their official websites.
- Ask both the same question: "Explain what a freelancer does, in 5 simple points."
- Write two sentences: which answer was clearer, and why?
